Will Kayce Dutton Reunite with Beth and Rip? Marshals Boss Breaks Down the Chances of a Dutton Ranch Crossover

Ever since the Yellowstone universe expanded into new territory, fans of Taylor Sheridan’s sprawling Western franchise have harbored a singular wish: watching the Dutton family dynamics collide across spin-off boundaries. Specifically, viewers have been clamoring for a massive crossover event between CBS’ procedural drama Marshals and Paramount+’s streaming series Dutton Ranch.
While network executives haven’t officially placed the event on the production schedule yet, creative leadership behind the franchise insists that a reunion between the surviving Dutton siblings isn’t a matter of if, but when.
“We’ve definitely talked about it for as long as I’ve been part of this show,” Marshals showrunner Spencer Hudnut revealed in an interview with TVLine. “I think it’s a goal.”
Two Different Worlds Built on the Same Dutton Legacy
A potential crossover between the two offshoots presents an intriguing creative challenge, given how differently each series operates.
Marshals follows an elite law enforcement unit headed by Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in Montana, structured around the weekly rhythm of a traditional broadcast network procedural. On the other hand, the Texas-set Dutton Ranch—which stars Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler—functions as a serialized streaming drama, producing and releasing its seasons on a flexible schedule.
Despite those distinct formats, Hudnut believes bringing Kayce together with his family would deliver enormous emotional payoff for the audience and the characters alike.
“We certainly would love to see Kayce and his sister reunited, whether it’s in Texas or in Montana,” Hudnut explained. “I think the audience deserves that, and I also think it would be super healthy for Kayce to be reminded that he does still have some family out there.”
The One Major Obstacle Standing in the Way
If the willingness to unite the shows is already there, what’s holding up the official announcement? According to Hudnut, the hold-up comes down to pure operational logistics.
“The reality of how we pull it off is a larger question that needs to be answered,” Hudnut admitted, citing contrasting production timelines. While the crew on Marshals is currently in the middle of filming, the writing team for Dutton Ranch has only recently begun penning their second season. Coordinating shooting schedules between two distinct production pipelines across separate networks and platforms means a full-blown crossover might still be a bit further down the road.
A Familiar Yellowstone Fan Favorite Heads to Marshals First
While fans wait for the grand reunion between Kayce, Beth, and Rip, Yellowstone viewers won’t have to wait nearly as long to see familiar faces bridging the spin-off gap.
Season 2 of Marshals is set to welcome back Jefferson White as beloved ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstrom. White, who portrayed Jimmy across more than 40 episodes of the original Yellowstone series, expressed his enthusiasm for stepping into the CBS procedural universe.
“I’m thrilled to dive into the world of Marshals and continue exploring the American West,” White shared. “The cast and crew are stacked full of my favorite actors and filmmakers, and I’m honored to join them. Jimmy and I have been through a lot together, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for us.”
White’s addition adds to an already robust ensemble of original Yellowstone veterans anchored on Marshals, including Grimes, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham. Meanwhile, Dutton Ranch continues to hold down its side of the franchise with Reilly, Hauser, and Finn Little.
With Jimmy making the leap to Marshals in Season 2, the pathway for larger franchise crossovers is officially wide open. The only question left for viewers is what dramatic emergency will eventually force Kayce to travel down to Texas—or pull Beth and Rip back home to Montana.
