Looking Back at the Yellowstone Phenomenon: The Truth Behind Kevin Costner’s Exit and the Franchise’s Future

During its monumental run, Yellowstone achieved what few contemporary cable series could ever dream of: it shattered streaming norms and routinely rivaled broadcast heavyweights in the ratings race. Season 5 proved to be an absolute ratings juggernaut, pulling in nearly 16 million viewers for its premiere and cementing its status as the most-watched program across all of television in 2022.
The momentum carried right through to its mid-season milestones, with the Season 5 finale drawing a massive 11.4 million same-day viewers that swelled to 13.1 million over three days. The neo-Western had successfully captured the kind of mainstream, appointment-viewing audience typically reserved for major network television.
That massive success made the sudden mid-season exit of its leading man, Oscar-winning movie star Kevin Costner, all the more shocking. As patriarch John Dutton III, Costner lent instant prestige, star power, and gravitas to the 2018 premiere, anchoring the sprawling narrative of the Montana land wars.
The Creative Fallout and Costner’s Side of the Story
When Costner’s abrupt departure was announced before Season 5 even finished airing, it left John Dutton’s storyline abruptly truncated and fans searching for answers. Series creator Taylor Sheridan expressed his open frustration regarding the exit in a 2023 interview with The Pioneer Woman, noting that while the overarching arc wasn’t fundamentally changed, the sudden cutoff severely shortened the closure the character deserved.
Initially, Hollywood speculation pinned the exit entirely on Costner’s desire to focus energy on his sweeping Horizon film saga. However, over a year later, Costner offered a different perspective during an interview with Deadline, shedding light on a much more complex contractual situation.
According to the actor, he had originally signed an agreement spanning Seasons 5, 6, and 7. After extensive negotiations, that plan was restructured into Seasons 5A and 5B, with a sixth season remaining uncertain. Costner stated that shifting production schedules continually clashed with his commitments to Horizon, despite Yellowstone holding primary position in his contract. Expressing frustration over how the situation was handled publicly, Costner told Deadline, “I haven’t felt good about it the last year, what with the way they’ve talked about it. It wasn’t truthful. So now I’m talking about a little bit about what the real truth of it was.”
Moving Forward in the Yellowstone Universe
Despite the behind-the-scenes friction, Sheridan wasted no time expanding the franchise. John Dutton’s story ultimately ended with the character being killed off in Season 5, but the universe continues to thrive through multiple spin-offs, including the sequel series Marshals.
For star Luke Grimes, who reprises his role as Kayce Dutton on Marshals, the transition has allowed him to step out from under the heavy shadow of his on-screen father and lead the franchise’s next phase. When asked by USA Today if there is any chance fans might see a return from Costner via flashbacks, Grimes admitted it’s unlikely.
“I think it would be cool [to have him come back],” Grimes shared. “I doubt that will happen at this point. I don’t know. If there was a flashback, I’d probably rather it be with Monica than John. I think that would be more poignant to the character. But we’ll see. There’s been no conversation, but we’ll see.”
As the franchise charts its course into its expanding future with Marshals and other offshoots, the legacy of the original series remains a defining chapter in modern television history—leaving fans to wonder how the Dutton empire might have looked had those initial seven seasons played out as originally planned.
