A Beverly Hills, 90210 Icon Leads a Wave of Surprising Guest Stars in the Chicago Med Season 12 Premiere

Gaffney Chicago Medical Center is back under intense pressure, and the Season 12 premiere spared no time plunging its medical staff into high-stakes chaos. Following a explosive Season 11 finale marked by personal milestones, tragic losses, and career setbacks, the emergency department reopened its doors directly to a mass casualty crisis. Centered around a horrific shooting at a wedding celebration, the premiere brought a surge of wounded patients, anxious families, and a notable lineup of guest performers to the ED.
Headlining the guest roster for the premiere is a recognizable face from 1990s television royalty: Beverly Hills, 90210 star Gabrielle Carteris. Famous for portraying Andrea Zuckerman on the iconic teen drama, Carteris steps into the high-drama world of One Chicago as Birdie Sutherland, the mother of the groom caught in the crossfire of the wedding tragedy.
A Packed Guest Cast Drives the Wedding Crisis
The wedding tragedy brought several talented actors into Gaffney’s trauma bays alongside Carteris. Among the key guest stars is young actress Scarlett Spears, who plays eight-year-old patient Dakota Cross. Spears recently appeared as young Galinda in Wicked: For Good and voiced the lead child character Bonnie in Toy Story 5.
Joining the wedding party, Jimi Stanton portrays the groom, Dexter Sutherland. Stanton brings extensive television experience to the role, having appeared across series like Your Honor, The Punisher, The Rookie, FBI: Most Wanted, and Blue Bloods. Baize Buzan plays the bride-to-be, Tamar—an interesting casting note for franchise fans, as Buzan previously guest-starred in Chicago Fire in two entirely separate roles.
Rounding out the core wedding lineup is Michael Alix as Bruno. Alix’s recent credits include appearances in projects such as Paper Tiger, The Pitt, Hacks, Daredevil: Born Again, Tires, FBI, and You.
Shift Changes and Leadership Friction Ahead
Beyond the crisis of the week, Season 12 introduces significant shifts in hospital dynamics. Recurring fan-favorite Devin Kawaoka returns as Dr. Kai Tanaka-Reed, with potential appearances lined up as the season develops. Meanwhile, new faces are stepping up to fill structural voids in the emergency department.
With Dr. Hannah Asher and Dr. Dean Archer/Dr. Caitlin Lenox away, the ED finds itself down two key physicians. Stepping into the breach is new character Dr. Annie Wu, played by An-Li Bogan, who arrives just as the department struggles under overwhelming patient loads.
The most intriguing long-term shift, however, takes place in the executive suite. Rebecca Breeds joins the series as Mallory Sloan, the hospital’s newly appointed administrator filling in for Sharon Goodwin. Preview footage showing Sloan settled behind Goodwin’s desk hints at immediate friction between the new management and the attending physicians. While Goodwin is expected to return to her post eventually, Sloan’s temporary reign promises to shake up hospital politics and test the staff’s patience throughout the early stretch of the season.
