Premature Moves and Unresolved Threats
Dissolving a criminal organization while an arch-enemy is still breathing free air—even behind cell bars—is a gamble. Sonny’s biggest enemy, Jenz Sidwell, may be locked up for now, but he has not been convicted. Without Jason standing guard as his enforcer, Sonny is left surprisingly exposed.
Dante Falconeri certainly saw the flaw in his father’s quick departure. While Dante was initially relieved when Sonny told him he was quitting the mob—relished in the idea of no longer having the conflict between being a cop and the son of a mob kingpin—he raised a critical point. With Jason walking away, who is going to stand in front of Sonny if someone comes for him? Dante is left with the lingering, terrifying worry that instead of arresting criminals, he might end up having to catch his own father’s killer if things turn tragic.
The landscape in Port Charles has certainly shifted. The Five Families are no longer the force they once were, and even Selina Wu has fled town. However, Selina left specifically because Sidwell drove her out. Before her departure, Selina had essentially banded together with Sonny for what little mob activity remained in town, which mostly amounted to high-stakes poker games. With those allies gone and Sidwell still on the board, dissolving the Corinthos organization could prove to be premature.
Painful Motivations and Heavy Family Losses
So why now? Sonny has likely weighed the life-and-death risks more than once, but personal revelations have clearly shifted his priorities. When Jason explained his own need to step away from the lifestyle to be there for his son, Danny Morgan, those words struck a deep, agonizing chord within Sonny.
Looking back, the emotional stakes could not be higher. Sonny’s children have been put in harm’s way time and time again purely because of his syndicate ties. Kidnappings have haunted his family over the years, and most tragically of all, the mob business was directly responsible for the death of his son, Morgan Corinthos. After decades of loss, the desire to finally cut ties and protect what remains of his family is understandable, even if the timing is fraught with danger.
Overseas Henchmen and a Dangerous Transition
If things go south, Sonny currently has nowhere to hide. While it is possible that Port Charles will remain calm and Sonny will be okay, becoming complacent while Sidwell is still a lingering threat remains immensely dangerous.
It is true that Sidwell currently lacks local henchmen in Port Charles to orchestrate a jailbreak, but that does not mean he is powerless. What if Sidwell has loyal operatives overseas ready to step up? Even with his assets frozen and his company up for grabs, Sidwell remains a lethal figure.
In the meantime, Sonny still wants to reclaim his piers, as Corinthos Coffee represents his legitimate business empire. However, during this sensitive transition to a life entirely free of mob ties, experts and allies would advise Sonny to proceed with extreme caution. Disbanding his men and abandoning his safe houses immediately would be foolish; keeping security measures active is essential until the danger has definitively passed.
With Jenz Sidwell still awaiting trial and old enemies always lurking in the shadows, will Sonny successfully navigate his way into a peaceful life, or has his sudden exit set the stage for an explosive ambush?
