A vengeful plot, a hidden pill swap, and a deadly frame-up are rocking Port Charles to its core. Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) is set to commit a calculated, vengeful act on General Hospital, leaving Jack Brennan (Chris L. McKenna) dead and Ava Jerome (Maura West) unwittingly caught in the middle of a murder scheme.
What was presented as a simple plan to keep Brennan distracted has spiraled into a fatal nightmare with massive fallout across town.
The Deadly Medication Swap
Drew led Ava to believe she was slipping a standard “sleeping pill” into Brennan’s drink to keep him occupied while Drew searched his hotel room for blackmail evidence. However, Drew did not hand her a simple sedative.
Instead, Drew allegedly provided Ava with lithium—the exact medication Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) takes for his bipolar disorder.
In retrospect, Ava arguably should have recognized the pill. She previously tampered with the medication of Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig), whose tragic death she helped contribute to.
However, Ava was in a rush to spike Brennan’s bourbon at the Metro Court. Distracted and eager to carry out the deed, she crushed the tablet and stirred it into his drink while Brennan stepped away to answer a phone call.
The Meticulous Frame-Up Plot
Drew’s actions were far from accidental. He crafted a meticulous plan designed to eliminate his own blackmail problems while simultaneously taking down Sonny—the very objective Ava originally teamed up with him to achieve.
Drew knew that mixing lithium with alcohol creates a deadly reaction. His master plan involved using Ava to drug Brennan, letting the lethal combination take its toll, and subsequently framing Sonny for the crime.
When combined with alcohol, lithium causes extreme drowsiness, disorientation, drunkenness, stumbling, profuse sweating, and severe confusion. As poisoning takes hold, the victim suffers from intense weakness and deadly dehydration brought on by overheating.
These exact symptoms explain Brennan’s erratic behavior in the elevator. Visibly disoriented and sweating, he pressed multiple buttons, unable to remember which floor held his suite.
Suffering from severe confusion and heat, Brennan may have wandered toward the Metro Court pool in a desperate attempt to cool off. He likely slipped into unconsciousness and drowned, making the physical manner of death an accident triggered by intentional poisoning.
Ava’s Panic and the Impending Fallout
Before news of Brennan’s death began spreading through town, a frantic Ava confronted Drew. Realizing the danger she was in, she warned him that if she went down for the drugging, she would take him down with her.
At the time, Ava believed Brennan was simply returning to his room, completely unaware that Drew had used her as a pawn in a lethal scheme to destroy Sonny.
Drew’s motive to pin the crime on Sonny is clear. Sonny has operated as a career criminal for decades, giving him an obvious, believable reason to target a WSB agent and law enforcement figure like Brennan.
Furthermore, Sonny was physically present at the Metro Court around the time Brennan died, having just met with Drew and Mayor Laura Collins (Genie Francis). The timing provides Drew with a seamless opportunity to accuse Sonny of drugging Brennan with his own prescription lithium.
