Days of Our Lives Cast Shakeups: Shocking Exits, High-Profile Recasts, and Major 2027 Returns
Salem is experiencing a whirlwind of change as shifting contracts, high-profile cast exits, and surprise recasts shake up the canvas. From beloved fan favorites stepping away to familiar daytime faces crossing over into mystery roles, the revolving door at Days of Our Lives is spinning faster than ever.
Fresh Faces and Daytime Crossovers
The coming months will introduce several exciting new additions to the cast. Daytime veteran Sofia Mattsson, widely known for her role as Sasha Gilmore on General Hospital, began filming in late March 2026. While her specific character remains under wraps, viewers can expect her to make a splash in Salem in early 2027. Joining the roster much sooner is Sydney Malakeh, who is set to debut on Wednesday, September 9, in an undisclosed role. Furthermore, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital alum Brytni Sarpy is slating a 2027 arrival, though details regarding her character also remain closely guarded.
Contract Demotions and Heartbreaking Exits
While new talent arrives, current stars are experiencing major status changes and permanent departures. In late March 2026, the show’s closing credits quietly revealed that longtime star Galen Gering (Rafe Hernandez) was moved off contract and dropped down to recurring status.
The departure list across the canvas continues to grow significantly. Elia Cantu, who plays Jada Hunter, was shifted to recurring status earlier in the year before announcing on Instagram in June that she had wrapped her final scenes, setting up an exit in 2027. Meanwhile, Nikki Crawford joined as a Lexie Carver recast on March 6 and wrapped her summer run on August 21, while Michael Roark ended his run as the Jeremy Horton recast on April 29 after arriving in October 2025. In addition, Marissa Reyes departed the canvas as Arianna “Ari” Horton on March 26 after stepping into the role in May 2025, and young actress Alice Halsey finished her run as Rachel Black on March 5 after being cast as Laura Ingalls in Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie revival.
The DiMera family is taking an especially hard hit with several key departures. Billy Flynn wrapped his long-standing run as Chad DiMera on February 17, having finished filming in 2024 due to the show’s advanced shooting schedule before making the jump to The Young and the Restless as the new Cane Ashby on June 16, 2025. Young actors Cary Christopher (Thomas DiMera) and Autumn Gendron (Charlotte DiMera) both made their final onscreen appearances alongside Flynn on February 17. Looking further ahead, January 2026 brought the announcement that a core group of Salem’s younger generation—Raven Bowen (Chanel DiMera), Carson Boatman (Johnny DiMera), Tate Black (Leo Howard), and Holly Jonas (Ashley Puzemis)—are all slated to exit in late 2026 or early 2027.
Recast City: New Actors Step Into Key Roles
To keep the storylines moving after these departures, several key characters are being recast. Conner Floyd takes over the heavy emotional mantle of Chad DiMera starting April 21, 2026. Meanwhile, Vico Escorcia steps into the role of Ari Horton during the week of April 6–10, and young actress Lorelei Olivia Mote took over as Rachel Black on March 17.
The role of Thomas DiMera saw multiple quick shifts this year, as Alexander Elijah Bond debuted in the role on April 21 for a short stint before Cole Gersmeyer officially took over on August 26. That same day, Pippa Blaylock debuted as the newest Charlotte DiMera.
Explosive Returns and Salem Reunions
It isn’t all farewells in Salem, as several blockbuster returns are already lined up. Looking ahead to June 2027, fan favorites Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) and Carrie Brady (Christie Clarke) will return for a special reunion storyline, joined by Lucas Horton (Bryan Dattilo) and Will Horton (Chandler Massey).
Other notable returns have already shaken up the canvas in major ways. Joy Wesley, played by AlexAnn Hopkins, returned on April 24 with a massive bombshell for Alex Kiriakis (Robert Scott Wilson), revealing that he is the father of her daughter, Kelsey Kiriakis (played by twins Lena and Mira Chase). Eli Grant (Lamon Archey) returned on February 3 to assist Rafe with the Alamainia investigation, bringing news that he and Lani Price-Grant (Sal Stowers) were moving back to Salem permanently, with the couple officially making their onscreen homecoming during the week of April 20. Additionally, Wes Ramsey made an explosive return in February 2026 after a 16-year absence as Owen Kent, exposing Owen as Stephanie Johnson’s (Abigail Klein) actual stalker before leaving town in early April. Finally, Louise Sorel made a brief but delightful return during the week of January 26, 2026, delivering the classic villainy that Vivian Alamain has brought to Salem on and off since 1992.
