Dutton Ranch Reveals Rip’s Successor: How Azul Is Stepping Into Yellowstone’s Most Iconic Cowboy Role

As Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western universe moves into its next chapter, the hierarchy at the ranch is officially shifting. With Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) stepping into authority as owners of their own operation, a major vacuum was left behind in the cowboy ranks. Now, Dutton Ranch has crowned its clear successor to Rip’s legendary former role as foreman: Azul, played by J.R. Villarreal.
This character evolution comes as the broader franchise continues to expand its reach across television, with Marshals Season 2 having premiered on CBS on October 4 to continue Kayce Dutton’s storyline. But back on the ranch, all eyes are on how Rip’s promotion reshapes the day-to-day operations and who will keep the crew in line beneath him.
A New Hierarchy at Dutton Ranch
The climax of the original Yellowstone series sent Beth and Rip down a dramatically different path. Rather than remaining bound to John Dutton’s oversight, the couple took control of their own destiny. After purchasing a ranch in Dillon, a devastating fire destroyed their new home in Montana, prompting them to buy the Edwards Ranch in Texas.
This fresh start serves as the core premise of Dutton Ranch. Across the first two episodes of the spinoff, Rip’s deep ranching experience and Beth’s sharp financial instincts quickly prove they are fully equipped to run their own business.
However, running a major cattle operation requires a trustworthy crew. While Rip previously answered directly to John Dutton, he now stands at the top of the food chain, making the tough calls himself. To keep the gears turning, Rip has assembled a much smaller team than the sprawling outfit John commanded at Yellowstone, anchored by Azul and his longtime friend Zachariah (Marc Menchaca).
How Azul Inherited Rip’s Old Position
With Rip stepping into the owner role, Azul has rapidly emerged as his primary right-hand man and the closest thing the new outfit has to a traditional foreman.
Fiercely loyal and hardworking, Azul mirrors the exact qualities that made Rip indispensable to John Dutton for decades. He is the dependable cowboy working directly beneath the boss, ready to execute orders and handle the demands of the range.
For a moment, it appeared another character might inherit the darker, more violent side of Rip’s old persona. Over at Beulah Jackson’s (Annette Bening) 10-Petal Ranch, bunkhouse boss Chet took command of the hands after witnessing Beulah’s son, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), murder a cowboy named Wes (Nakoa DeCoite). Driven by fierce loyalty to his superiors, Chet violently attacked two cowboys in Episode 2, sending one to the hospital after Jackson pushed him toward confrontation.
However, Chet’s sudden death later in Season 1 cut that trajectory short. With Chet out of the picture, Azul stands alone as the enduring heir to Rip’s former place in the franchise hierarchy—the steady, reliable right hand who holds the outfit together.
The Burdens of Being the Boss
Even though Rip is no longer taking orders from John Dutton, stepping into the top leadership spot hasn’t freed him from the dangerous, morally grey situations that defined his life at Yellowstone.
When Wes’s partially buried corpse is discovered on the property he owns with Beth, Rip makes the executive decision to hide the body inside a freezer. The tense move proves that while his title has changed, Rip’s hardened fixer instincts remain as sharp as ever.
The fundamental difference now is accountability: Rip must rely entirely on his own judgment rather than looking to John for direction. As Rip navigates these high-stakes decisions, having a loyal foreman like Azul becomes essential to keeping the ranch afloat.
Whether Azul can maintain his steadiness without being pulled into the darker underbelly of the Dutton legacy remains one of the most compelling questions as Dutton Ranch unfolds.
