A familiar face is making a full-fledged comeback to Salem, but fans expecting a ghostly reprisal are in for a brand-new surprise. Actor Brandon Butler, who briefly appeared on Days of Our Lives in 2025 as Bo and Hope’s late son, Zack Brady, is officially returning to the Peacock daytime drama in a brand-new role, bringing a fresh surge of character energy to the canvas.
The 411 on Brandon Butler’s New Role and Tribute
Longtime Salem loyalists will recall Butler’s brief 2025 stint as Zack Brady, the iconic, tragic son of Bo Brady (Peter Reckell) and Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso). However, rather than returning as a vision or supernatural manifestation of the late Brady child, Butler is stepping onto the canvas as a completely distinct character named Mason Whitfield. His official debut in the new role is slated for the Tuesday, September 1 episode.
To mark his return, Days of Our Lives published a promotional introduction video across their official social media channels. In the clip, Butler introduced himself directly to daytime fans and offered up five fun personal facts about his life and upbringing.
Born and raised in Frankfort, Illinois, Butler grew up with a deep passion for competitive sports, spending his childhood playing basketball and baseball. Yet, his drive for athletics was always balanced by a love for performance arts. Butler reflected on his early balance of passions, noting that growing up, he could regularly be found either auditioning in the theater or playing on the sports field. He even recalled an early career milestone featuring a poster campaign for a major fast-food chain’s meal toy.
The actor also shared a deeply emotional and personal moment during the video, revealing that Days of Our Lives held a deeply sacred place in his family home as his late mother’s absolute favorite soap opera. Honoring her memory as he steps back onto the Salem set, Butler dedicated his career milestone directly to her, stating, “So this one’s for you, Mom. Love you.”
Brandon Butler’s Screen Resume
Before taking on the fresh role of Mason Whitfield, Butler built an impressive television resume across both daytime and major streaming platforms. Outside of his 2025 appearance as Zack Brady on Days of Our Lives, he played Scott Reed in Netflix’s hit teen drama 13 Reasons Why and portrayed Brady Finch in the streaming series Trinkets.
His acting journey began at the age of 13 when he made his feature debut in the 2011 musical comedy Sister Mary, playing a choir boy. Since then, he has built a steady line of credits across television, including a guest spot on General Hospital as a “frat guy,” as well as appearances on SEAL Team and Hysteria!.

Butler’s arrival as Mason Whitfield comes as Days of Our Lives undergoes a noticeable casting expansion.
