A “Devilish” New Schemer Joins EJ’s Water Crisis Cover-Up
Emmy-winning comedian and Last Week Tonight host John Oliver is officially touching down in Salem, bringing his signature wit to Days of Our Lives as a “devilish character” named Devlin St. John. Viewers can catch the late-night star on the Peacock soap across a three-episode stint airing Tuesday, August 11, Wednesday, August 12, and Friday, August 14.
Devlin St. John steps onto the canvas as Salem’s Chief Water Inspector, placing him squarely at the center of EJ DiMera’s high-stakes corporate cover-up. EJ is scrambling to conceal the dangerous fallout from his illegal disposal of contaminated drugs on a nearby island, which has directly affected the city’s water supply.
To ensure Oliver’s guest stint aired as quickly as possible, Days of Our Lives went against its usual production schedule. While the soap typically tapes nearly a year in advance, producers edited Oliver’s scenes directly into episodes that had already been filmed. Executive Producer Ken Corday recalled the decision, noting that when Oliver publicly declared he wanted to be part of the soap world, the show simply had to heed the call.
High-Stakes Confrontations with Paulina, EJ, and Rita
Oliver’s character is not taking it easy during his brief time in Salem. Weekly promos reveal that Devlin will share significant screen time with Mayor Paulina Price, EJ DiMera, and Rita Lesley.
Jackée Harry offered TV Insider a playful preview of how Paulina reacts to Salem’s newest official, revealing that Devlin attempts to outsmart the city, but Paulina refuses to fall for his tactics, prompting him to move on to his next target. Meanwhile, Dan Feuerriegel teased that EJ’s interactions with Devlin will deliver classic soap opera flair. Feuerriegel shared that their scenes feature full daytime drama tropes, revealing they did everything expected in a soap, including slapping each other.
From ESPN Envy to Daytime Reality
Oliver’s leap into daytime television began in March when he aired a segment on Last Week Tonight expressing playful envy toward ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who has enjoyed a decade-long recurring role as Brick on ABC’s General Hospital. Oliver made it clear that he was open to joining any daytime drama willing to give him a meaningful role. By late June, Oliver proudly announced he had secured roles on both General Hospital and Days of Our Lives.
During an Access Hollywood set visit in June while Oliver was filming in Salem, the comedian called the gig a “dream come true.” He praised the cast and crew’s intense work ethic, recognizing how fast everything moves and expressing that he just wanted to make sure he didn’t mess up their well-oiled machine. Feuerriegel warmly praised Oliver in return, noting that hearing John speak highly of their hard work was a great feather in their cap, adding on Instagram that Oliver was amazing to work with.
Oliver’s appearance on Days of Our Lives completes his summer soap tour. Just last month in July, he wrapped up a three-day arc on General Hospital, where he portrayed Z, the clever head of the World Security Bureau (WSB).
