Days of Our Lives Spoilers: Is Stefano’s AI Essence Living Inside EJ DiMera’s Ring?

The specter of the Phoenix has always cast a long, dark shadow over Salem, but EJ DiMera’s increasingly cruel behavior has fans wondering if his late father is doing more than just haunting his memory. Since slipping on Stefano DiMera’s iconic signet ring, EJ has transformed into a turbo-diabolical powerhouse, targeting enemies and family members alike with an uncharacteristic level of malice. With bad omens mounting and EJ’s behavior growing more ruthless by the day, Days of Our Lives spoilers and updates suggest that the ring itself might be housing a high-tech piece of Stefano’s legacy—and channeling the Phoenix directly into his son’s mind.
The Ghost of “Steveano” and Dr. Rolf’s Twisted AI Legacy
To understand how a piece of jewelry could possess EJ (Dan Feuerriegel), Salem fans only have to look back a few years at Dr. Wilhelm Rolf’s (Richard Wharton) mad science Experiments. Longtime viewers will recall that the original concept of “Stefano’s Essence” wasn’t a ghostly spirit, but an advanced artificial intelligence brain chip. When Rolf implanted that microchip into Steve “Patch” Johnson (Stephen Nichols), it completely erased his identity and turned him into the infamous “Steveano.”
That dark chapter eventually came to an end when the chip was surgically extracted, after which Chad DiMera (Thaddaeus Zweifer / Conner Floyd) and Tony DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) burned the sinister device in an ashtray. Following that destruction, Rolf was forced to go on the run once again without reviving his beloved master. Later, after the dramatic imprisonment of the DiMera family in the crypt and the terrifying discovery of Stefano’s actual bones, Rolf was forced to answer for his actions. Yet, once the dust settled and the DiMera clan was safe, EJ began wearing Stefano’s prized signet ring.
That single choice seemed to alter the atmosphere in Salem almost overnight. Wearing the ring triggered immediate, unsettling reactions across town. Susan Banks (Stacy Haiduk) began intuitively sensing Stefano’s overwhelming presence, while Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) started suffering from terrifying, mysterious nightmares.
Is Stefano’s Essence Embedded in the Ring?
There has been a distinct, unmistakable shift in EJ whenever he slips the signet ring onto his finger. While he undeniably retains EJ’s personal memories, sharp intelligence, and intricate plans, his overarching demeanor seems heavily influenced by his father. It feels as though Stefano’s very spirit resides within the metal, inhabiting EJ the moment he puts it on.
This eerie transformation raises a compelling question: could Rolf have engineered an updated AI chip that controls the wearer without requiring invasive brain surgery?
Knowing he could not save his longtime master in any other way—and aware that the initial brain chip was destroyed—it sounds entirely like something Dr. Rolf would pull off. Under Stefano’s orders or out of sheer loyalty, Rolf could have designed a spare chip holding Stefano’s “essence” and hidden it safely inside the signet ring. That way, whoever wore the ring would automatically fall under the Phoenix’s dark influence.
Uncharacteristic Cruelty Drives a Wedge in the DiMera Dynasty
While the DiMera family is notoriously dysfunctional, EJ’s actions while wearing the ring have crossed into a brand-of-cruelty that feels shockingly extreme, even for him. Under normal circumstances, it seems unlikely that EJ would have taken the drastic step of putting Coraseal pills tainted with arsenic in front of Holly Jonas (Ashley Puzemis). Nor does it fully align with his core personality to commit the cold, unforgiving acts that his own son, Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman), now holds against him so deeply.
It appears as though the ring’s hidden influence is actively reaching into EJ’s psyche, corrupting his decision-making and pushing him toward utter villainy. Yet, despite the obvious emotional toll on his loved ones and the destruction of his family ties, EJ refuses to give up the ring. He is utterly hooked on the overwhelming sense of power and the lingering influence of his father, making it clear he won’t surrender the ring to anyone, for any reason.
As EJ continues to fall deeper under the spell of Stefano’s signet ring, will anyone in Salem realize that Dr. Rolf’s mad science might be pulling the strings? Or will Stefano’s lingering essence consume EJ entirely before his family can save him from himself?
