Chicago P.D. Shakes Up Season 14 as Broadway Vet Kyle Selig Arrives as Hank Voight’s Oddest Rival Yet

Hank Voight has faced off against intimidating bosses, corrupt prosecutors, and ruthless cartel leaders throughout his tenure on Chicago P.D., but his latest obstacle presents an entirely unfamiliar challenge. In Chicago P.D. Season 14, Episode 3, Broadway star Kyle Selig made his official bow as FBI Agent Charlie Boyden—a character whose unique demeanor and bureaucratic authority are already giving Intelligence’s formidable leader a major headache.

Boyden arrives at District 21 courtesy of federal restructuring, charged with a task guaranteed to ruffle feathers: scrutinizing Voight’s precinct to ensure federal funds allocated to the team are being spent correctly. Coming right on the heels of Kevin Atwater’s departure to start a new chapter in Atlanta, the fed’s sudden oversight has sparked instant resentment among Intelligence loyalists.

A Clumsy, Well-Meaning Fed with an Unconventional Vibe

What makes Boyden particularly dangerous to the precinct’s status quo isn’t a malicious agenda or an aggressive power play. Instead, it’s his sheer quirkiness. Unlike the slick or combative adversaries Voight typically battles, Boyden is sweet-natured, slightly clumsy, yet strictly professional—resembling an awkward procedural detective who would feel right at home on a classic CBS drama.

Voight, who usually goes to battle against anyone attempting to dismantle his unit, finds himself in uncharted territory: dealing with an auditor who genuinely means well. While Boyden is hard to read and poised to be a constant thorn in Voight’s side, whether he ultimately turns out to be a friend or foe to Intelligence remains to be seen.

From Broadway Hits to the One Chicago Universe

While three episodes into the season offer only a glimpse of Boyden’s motivations, the actor bringing him to life boasts an extraordinarily versatile career across stage and screen.

Selig is widely celebrated for his standout theatrical work, having starred as Aaron Samuels in Mean Girls the Musical, played Jakob Jankowski in Water for Elephants, and appeared in multiple roles in the hit musical The Book of Mormon.

On screen, Selig previously held a main role as Dylan across Seasons 1 and 2 of the comedy series Welcome to Flatch. His television guest spots include appearances on Madam Secretary, Evil, Girls5eva, Mulligan, and fellow Dick Wolf procedural FBI: International. Filmgoers may also recognize him from titles such as Cat Person, Christmas in Tahoe, Housewives of the North Pole, and his turn as Mr. Komos in Monster High: The Movie.

Will Voight Tolerated Federal Oversight or Push Boyden Out?

Selig’s rich background spanning comedy, action, drama, and horror equips him with the precise balance needed to portray the quirky federal agent. Yet as Boyden settles into District 21, the central tension remains: can a well-meaning federal auditor coexist with Hank Voight’s notorious methods, or will Chicago’s toughest Sergeant find a way to force the FBI out of his precinct for good?
